    Editing & post-production for Angler Walkabout DVD's

We are working with author Julian Wicksteed, writer of the Angler Walkabout series of books which document his fishing adventures to the "blank spots on the map".
We are helping him to create a series of four DVD's, each one documenting one of his journeys across Patagonia, Alaska, Tasmania and West Africa.

Julian has over 12 hours of footage for each DVD, so we taught him to use an edit suite where he cut out the unwanted footage. We are now helping him to write a script & a paper edit before we begin cutting down the remaining footage and editing it into a final piece.
We are working on Patagonia first, with the other 3 films coming soon after. Once the film is complete we will produce the complete dvd package which will be available online.

Boat Stories 'Fishing for the long haul' film completed

Mark has just finished the edit on our film for the Boat Stories project.
The film, titled 'Fishing for the long haul?', follows the crew of the fishing trawler 'Sparkling Star' as they work in the Bristol Channel. This involved Mark spending 30 hours aboard the boat filming the guys at work.
The film has since become more poignant. The crew often talk about sustaining fish stock levels and just before the film was released, the fishing industry was rocked by the news of fish quotas being met and hundreds have been laid off of work.
For more information about the film and the state of the industry, visit boatstories.co.uk.

Live filming and vision mixing for Bridgwater Carnival 2014

We are back in the office after our 3rd year at the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, the largest illuminated procession in Britain, where we have been providing live filming & vision mixing services for the big screen in the centre of town.

We provided the cameras and crew to film the parade and broadcast the footage onto a huge screen. The vision mixing was carried out by us using an OB truck supplied by the screen providers. We also displayed live footage of bands playing on the stage and of the crowds throughout the day in the run-up to the big event.
We filmed using three cameras, one of which was a wireless roaming camera that we sent out onto the high street to capture the street performers

On location were Mark, Stu, Matt and Phil with Mark operating the mixing desk from the OB van. Light rain throughout the day couldn't put off the huge crowds - thousands were in attendance! Mark also had the task of broadcasting text messages from the public on the big screen as well as live/archive footage & advertisements.
Our IT apprentice Barnaby created a special webpage which we were able to overlay onto the video screen. This page had a separate admin area allowing Mark to enter new text messages from the crowd and refresh the live ticker without the need to take it off screen. You can see this on the second image on the left.

We also tried out our Blackmagic 4K production camera as it was an ideal opportunity to see how well it could cope with the extremes of light & dark. You can see a full resolution 4k screen grab by clicking here - 4K image sample (1.6mb file)

Once again the organisers were very pleased with the results and we hope to be back again next year!.

Christmas TV advert filming with Colour247

We have been working with Colour 247 on a project as camera crew, using our cameras & delivering the rushes for editing & post production.
We have just wrapped on another shoot, this time we were creating a winter wonderland right here in Croyde. The final output will be a number of short 10 second tv adverts promoting Christmas shopping at a shopping centre located in Wales and will be shown on local Welsh television.
This is the first time that we have been called upon to set-up christmas trees on set and most of the crew brought their own trees from home to help set the scene. We were also joined on set by Nicky, a model from Gloucester who travelled down for the day & was made to wear a Christmas hat in October.
The adverts, shot on the Blackmagic 4k camera, are set to air next month.

BBC Horizons menu design, DVD production & duplication for Turkish audiences

Media production specialists TwoFour have been working with BBC World News to produce a Turkish language version of it' popular 'Horizons' programme. This involved dubbing any interviews with English speakers into Turkish and filming new sections with a Turkish presenter.
The episodes were originally aired in Turkey on CNN Turk. The BBC needed to produce a short run of DVD's containing all 8 episodes complete with English subtitles. To achieve this TwoFour approached us.
Using video assets and cover artwork supplied by TwoFour we created two DVD menus, re-timed the subtitles, and built a master DVD. Once approved we duplicated copies onto Dual Layer discs which were delivered to the BBC. The discs were printed in house and the special cardboard wallet was produced externally.

Voiceovers recorded for Nalu Beads 'How-to' videos

In June we filmed four 'how-to' videos with the ladies from Nalu Beads - a manufacturer of beautiful glass beads, which along with a range of coloured leather thongs, can be made into customised bracelets, necklaces & anklets.

The voice overs have been recorded to match the edited films and the videos should be released soon. The project has been delayed due to Nalu Beads having an extremely busy summer - certainly no bad thing! The autumn has brought quieter times allowing to to concentrate on finishing the films.

Keep an eye out for the tuitional videos which will appear online soon.

    CozyComforts online store goes live

We have been working to build a brand new online store for new company CozyComforts.co.uk, a website which offers quality sheepskin and leather clothing and household goods
The website is still being updated, with new products being added all of the time. We were under a deadline as the site owner wanted to go live and build interest early in advance of the Christmas shopping rush.
The logo design was created externally, from which we took the colour scheme/styling ad applied it to the whole site. Over the next few weeks we will be updating aspects of the site, adding new imagery and tracking down any little issues. But the site has already received a number of sales so the future looks positive.

4K filming for Bristol Hippodrome Panto TV adverts with Colour247

You never know where the next project will take you and this one was certainly a bit different. We were called upon by production company Colour 247 to assist with the filming of a number of TV, cinema & web adverts to promote the 2014 pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome Theatre, Dick Whittington.
The clips were to be filmed in 4K and against a white backdrop. The stars of the panto came along including Britains Got Talent winners Ashleigh & Pudsey. Pudsey posed the greatest challenge for us as lighting our white floor for him was a lot more difficult than the humans.
The footage looks great and the cast had a good laugh which should make the final adverts feel fun and inviting.

Interview at S&P Fish Shop for Boat Stories Film

The final round of filming for our installement in the Boat Stories project took place at S & P Fish Shop in Ilfracombe. Mark and new apprentice Toby met with shop owner Claire to learn more about what happens to the fish after they leave the trawler.

S & P is unique in Ilfracombe in that the shop is part of a larger business that also owns three trawlers, ensuring fresh produce caught by their own crews is sold in the shop and to others in the area & nationwide.

Mark & Toby carried out an interview with Claire before capturing cutaway shots of the shop and the surrounding harbour. This wraps filming on the Boat Stories film snd now we can concentrate on finishing the edit!

Under the direction of Colin, Mark filmed a range of attractions at the venue, from the petting zoo to bumper boats using our PMW-200 camera.

Filming went well, despite a few issues with a camera shy hawk who refused to perform!

Live event filming for the Actavis Summer party

Every year, Actavis Pharmaceuticals hold a summer party for the staff (and their families) who work at their Barnstaple factory. For the second year running the event was held at Hartland Abbey in North Devon.
Stu & Toby attended the party armed with fully rigged Canon HDSLR cameras to capture the action. Our brief was simple....capture the performers, the musicians and, most importantly, the staff & their families having fun!
The sun shone, the bands were great, the Punch & Judy show had the kids screaming with delight while the adults enjoyed free candy floss.
We captured some great footage and will quickly edit this into a 3 minute highlights film that will be shown in and around the factory using video screens and the company intranet.

Interview with Paul Stone for Boat Stories Film

The edit for our instalment in the Boat Stories project is moving along nicely. But we need a few extra interviews that Mark couldn't capture on his 24hr stint at sea last month.
Mark met up in Ilfracombe with producer Jo Stewart-Smith & the skipper of 'Sparkling Star III', Paul Stone. It was a beautiful day and as well as interviewing Paul about his experiences in the fishing industry, Mark was able to film a number of cutaways of the harbour, boats and of Paul and his crew preparing the boat for sea.
We still have one more interview to film but this footage will be cut into the edit very soon.

Blu-ray production for Le Mans 24h 2014 review

We have been working on the Blu-Ray release of the Le Mans 2014 official review. Working with content producers Duke, this is the 3rd year that we have designed and authored the Blu-Ray complete with motion and pop-up menus.
The 4h feature + special features were produced by Duke Marketing and sent to us. Using artwork and logo assets sent by Duke with the video we designed a motion menu with pop-up menu features, a separate pop-up menu to work on the the main feature & special features and finally created a master copy of the disk.
The disk is being replicated so we used a special piece of software to incorporate copy protection into the master files. These files will be used at the factory to replicate 1000's of copies for sale.
The final product will be sold on the Duke website, in stores and on Amazon.

VFX shot production for We Still KiIl The Old Way

We have been working with producer Neil Jones to help out with a couple of VFX edits for the upcoming film We Still Kill The Old Way.
Back in May we provided our Blackmagic 4K camera, lenses, tripod and directors monitor for the shoot which took place in London and Marbella.

The film is now in post-production but they needed a little help with two of the shots. We have carried out VFX work for Neil on some of his previous films so he got in touch.

The 1st shot involved tracking a phone screen in a moving shot & adding a new set of phone graphics. The 2nd involved making a prop shotgun look real by adding firing pins to the moving shot.

They approached TwoFour to re-edit their existing 'Learn CPR' educational films - replacing the branding to bring the films in line with their current marketing.
Once the films were completed Twofour asked us to assist with the DVD authoring. This included re-designing the DVD menus to fit the new branding guidelines.

    Jollyphonics DVD authoring

We have just completed a DVD authoring project for childrens tv channel Cartoonito wworking with educational publisher Jolly Learning called 'Sounds Like Fun'
Sounds Like Fun was broadcast on Cartoonito over 36 episodes. It uses the Jolly Phonics system of learning word sounds to help children begin building words quickly, promoting better speech and learning.

We were provided with the full series of 36 episodes, 36 credit sequences plus 36 clips of phonics sounds. Menu artwork was supplied by Cartoonito but we also created a motion menu using their supplied graphic elements.
Building the DVD required a lot of menus and some clever scripting to get around some limitations of the DVD format but in the end we have created a DVD that the client is very happy with and one that we hope will help young children to learn to speak at a younger age & further their development.

200fps slo-mo filming for Wookey Hole TV spots

It's always fun to take on a new challenge. Today we were filming in Bristol with Colour 247 using a Sony FS-700 camera filming at 200 frames per second (normal video runs at 25-30fps!). We were called in to help with capturing the super slo-mo action which was filmed against a green screen. The footage will be mixed with 3D graphics to create a series of new tv adverts for Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset..
Filming involved a family reacting to a number of scenarios while Mark and the Colour247 team very quickly tracked 180degrees around them using a dolly. The combination of the dolly movement and 1/8th speed will create an effect similar to bullet time - a technique made famous in the Matrix movies.

Although challenging to work with a new technique - the shoot went well and the footage looks fantastic! We can't wait to see the finished adverts!

Mark & our work experience student Toby captured the action on the Sony PWM-200 while Stu waded out into the lake with the Canon 7D to capture still images.

To help their customers in their creations, the ladies at Nalu Beads felt that they needed to replace their step-by-step pictorial instructions with a series of 'how-to' videos.

To film this, we built a custom camera rig to give us a birds eye view of the bracelet construction and also filmed a 2nd close-up angle using the Sony PMW-200.
We still need to record the voiceover for the videos but the visual edit is looking great!

Just before starting the interview process for our new apprentice, we were joined for a week by Imogen, who is currently studying Animation at Falmouth University.
As part of her course she is required to gain experience by spending time with companies like ourselves and we were happy to let her join the team.
During her week we introduced her to photography and the use of SLR cameras and lenses. Understanding how depth of field works will be useful in her animations in future. She also worked in photoshop and assisted on a shoot at an estate agents. She even made an appearance as a customer.
We are always happy to help young up and coming talent where possible and we wish Imogen the best for Uni and beyond.

    CMC Apprenticeship film completed

In March we told you about our greenscreen shoot in Cumbria with apprentices from the CMC (Cumbria Museums Consortium)
The film is finished and is now available to view online. We used a combination of Final Cut, Motion and DaVinci Resolve10 to grade the footage, remove the green background and create a series of animations to suit the subject of the film.

The aim was to promote the apprenticeship scheme being run by the CMC through positive messages from the young people who have been taking part. Helen, our contact at the CMC, was very pleased with the final outcome and the consortium have posted the video onto their Vimeo channel

DVD production & authoring for the Irish Film Institute

The Irish Film Archive, Part of the Irish Film Institute has been working on a 2 disk dvd set documenting the films of irish director Thaddeus O'Sullivan.
The films were transferred from 35mm film into a digital format and cleaned up by in-house techs at the IFI. But when it came to building a DVD they needed outside assistance.
We were sent the finished films along with artwork. Using this we created animated menus for both DVD's and encoded the films before exporting them in a format suitable to replication.
The IFI are very pleased with the final disks and as I type they are being replicated by our long term working partners Eurodiscs.

DVD authoring for British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation carry out amazing work and recently they worked with TwoFour to produce a series of films on the theme of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in children and how to support & raise a child born with it.
Once the films were completed Twofour asked us to assist with the DVD authoring. The DVD will be handed out to parents of babies born with CHD so we were proud to take part.
We designed a number of DVD menus using artwork assets supplied to us & following BHF brand guidelines. Once the designs were signed off we took the pre-encoded films (19 in total), built the menu structure, added subtitles to each film and finally created master disks to be used for replication.
We really hope that the DVD will go some way to helping parents of children with CHD.

CD duplication for Far North District

Local band Far North District, have just finished recording their new 4 track EP and needed to quickly produce a number of copies before the launch party.
Tony from the band contacted us a week before the launch. He had already designed artwork for the cover and disk and after a quick chat he decided to go with a printed cardboard wallet for the album.
We were easily able to get the CD's completed in time (despite a quick cover re-design to fit the new wallet format) and the launch party was a success.
Update: Since writing this the band have returned for more copies having sold out of the 1st batch. Let's hope that they keep selling well in preparation for a full album!

Interview With The Surfer film repair & conversion

Local legend Trev 'Toes' Lumley has been a key figure on the North Devon scene for as long as we can remember.
In October Trev popped into the office brandishing a battered looking VHS tape. On the tape was a short film made in the 90's called Interview With The Surfer.
Trev himself appears in the film and he felt that it was time this "masterpiece" saw the light of day.

We digitised the tape, cleaned up the footage as best we could and also repaired the sound which was quite noisy.
The 26 min film is now available to view on Youtube - http://youtu.be/OXrcUE_Qphw

    Cumbria Museums Apprenticeship filming

In March the Maniac team journeyed to Cumbria to film a number of greenscreen interviews with apprentices working throughout the CMC (Cumbria Museums Consortium), a partnership of 3 museum in Cumbria.
The CMC wanted to promote their work with young people through the apprenticeship scheme. The apprentices had been working across all 3 sites (The Wordsworth Trust, Lakeland Arts & Tullie House Museum). We filmed using a green screen and our new Blackmagic 4K camera. We had to conduct a series of tests prior to shooting to ensure that the camera footage, wehn ingested into DaVinci 10 and using LUTs within the software, would give us a clean green to pull a key from.
We will be editing the footage and creating a series of animations to use in the film over the next few weeks. See the CMC apprentices blog post about the shoot - here

Colour grade and rotoscoping for Atramentum 4K edit

Local photographer & filmmaker, Christopher Lane, has asked us again to work on the colour grading for a 4K (Ultra High Definition) edit.
The video is a promotional piece for use on his showreel and takes the form of a fictitious skin-care brand advert. The piece was edited on Avid by a film editor and then passed to us for grading.

As well as the grade which was carried out by mark, Stu also had to carry out some Rotoscoping work on two clips. In these clips the model is looking at the camera while sat in a bath, suggesting nudity. However the model's bra was showing against the side of her breast and Stu had to remove the offending item frame by frame.
The final video can be seen now on Vimeo on on Chris' website christopherlane.co.uk

The film was shot on a mix of DSLR and the Sony PMW-200 and we also had an opportunity to use the Jib on stage.

The new ECombat website goes live

Over the last couple of months we have been completely re-designing and re-vamping the website for ECombat, worldwide suppliers of laser tag gaming equipment.
The website had to reflect their brand, stepping away from the old design which was cluttered and difficult to navigate. A new logo and look was designed by graphic designer Chris Barrett and website layout/user journeys were designed by Phil Saunders. Here at Maniac we took the design layouts and graphics from Phil & Chris and re-worked the website to make them fit in as well as adding a lot of new features and functions required by the client.
Paul at ECombat is very happy with the finished site and has received a lot of positive feedback from clients. We will be assisting in some ongoing work including translation of the entire site into multiple languages
