St Annes Chapel restoration project - Last update October 2012.
St Annes Chapel is Barnstaple's last surviving Chantry Chapel. Although there is no record of when St. Anne's was built it is thought to date predominately to the early 14th century.
In 1549 the chapel ceased to be a church building and came into ownership of the town. By the 17th century it had become the town's grammar school and remained that way until 1910.
Following the closure of St. Anne's as a school the building became the town's museum. The layout of the museum changed many times over the years. St. Anne's finally closed its doors for good around 1997 and, with the exception of the occasional special events and guided tours, the doors have remained locked.
|
However, in 2012 a massive restoration project has begun to revive the chapel in preparation for the building to be used for a range of events and activities. Maniac Films will working with the team behind the restoration to create a virtual tour which will be used for educational purposes at the chapel, in schools and even on the web!
This page will document our work on the project!

August 2012 - Location filming - St Anne's Chapel virtual tour film
After months of planning the filming dates for the St Anne's Chapel film finally arrived. We were on-set at 8am to begin setting up our equipment in readiness for the arrival of our cast at 10am.
Our crew was made up of Director Stuart Brennan, Stu & Mark from Maniac, Richard Standen, Sam Zie, Brad Aston and Matt Biggs. Playing the role of Isaac was Ian Cullen alongside local actress Kimberley Wylde who played the role of Susan.
The weather blessed us and apart from an interruption from a nearby house alarm we were able to get everything in the can before days end . On Friday Mark quickly put together an assembly edit while Stu & Sam filmed pick-up shots at the Chapel. That afternoon we were joined by Kimberley for the final scene before wrapping.
The film form part of a St Anne's Chapel website and will be online soon.

May 2012 - Filming students learning to use quill pens at Newport Community School.
We were invited to join Julian Vayne from North Devon Museum on his recent visit to Newport Community School in Barnstaple - one of a number of teaching sessions in which Julian is introducing the students to artefacts from St Annes Chapel.
This session with the kids introduced the students to quill pens and allowed them to have a go at writing using the implements - lets just say that things got a little messy with blobs of ink everywhere!
Stu from Maniac took along a couple of costumes, kindly loaned by the Barnstaple Heritage Centre, and asked a couple of willing volunteers to dress up as victorian children. He then filmed them writing in copperplate script - learning their alphabet.
This footage will be used in the upcoming virtual tour film for St Annes Chapel

April 2012 - Viewing the St Annes collection at the museum.
Over the years a large number or artefacts have been found at St Annes Chapel in Barnstaple, including paper darts made by pupils at the grammar school and animal bones, even clay pipes that once would have been smoked by the teachers!
Many of these artefacts are stored at North Devon Museum and Mel from the museum was kind enough to give us a tour and the chance to get into the storage rooms to examine some of the pieces.
We will be returning in a fortnight to photograph a large number of the pieces for the interactive DVD and Peter Doel has agreed to let us photograph the paper darts and other pieces held by him as well. This is a great step forward in the project!
Unfortunately there is one piece that we cannot photograph, the Hugenot cloth. This is an 18th century alter cloth which sadly (for us) cannot be removed from it's display. (see pic on the left)
