Local surfing local people
Featuring surfing footage and interviews with North Devon local surfers, the film was comissioned by Barnstaple Museum as part of the recent Surfs Up exhibition. Maniac films were asked to edit together footage filmed by the kids at Braunton Community College and mix in some stock surfing footage from the local area. We couldnt resist adding in a whole lot more and enlisted the help of local filmmakers Richard Gregory, Chris Preston and Matt Biggs plus surf photographers extremeboardshots to help bring this production alive with some classic stills and footage.
Its all in the timing...
"the kids were meant to interview more local surfing stars like Tim Heylan from Tiki, but the timing was just too tight in the end (4 weeks) so we just did an extra interview with Steve 'Pixie' Godfrey to help thread the narrative together" said Mark Brindle from Maniac films.
"we were able to use up some of our existing material - with existing surfing footage and interviews with Ralph Freeman, Simon Twitchen, Tim Lehan, Adam Thornton and Eddy Knight" said Mark. "..plus some music video we'd done with Pete Bruntnell and The Universe Inspectors..and call in quite a few favours from local filmmakers and other local musicians too!"
" We got some great surfing and water based footage to use from Richard Gregory - some test shots from the movie 'One day' (see www.notcalifornia.com for more) and balanced that out with some of our own surfing footage from the local area." said Mark.

This film is a unique and well documented insight into the surfers, surfboards and shapers that have roamed the North Devon coast over the last 50 years. What makes this film extra special is that it was made with a great deal of support from the likes of Tiki, Extreme boardshots, Barnstaple museum etc and is the product of a collaboration between Maniac films and Braunton Community college...that's what i call community spirit. It features some great footage in and out of the water. Think groms interviewing their local heroes and some outstanding surfing from old and young, longboarders and short! All the big local names are here: Cotty, Skelly Skelton, Ralph Freeman, Kathleen Spears, Lyndon Wake, Stuart Campbell, Ester Spears to name but a few. There's footage from Croyde, Woolacombe, the point, Oysters and we get welcomed into the shaping bay at Gulf Stream. This film highlights the great surfing community we have here in Britain and is a celebration of surfing in Devon.
