We have created a new shooting kit for the DJI Ronin-S. This new kit adds the DJI Focus motor, top bracket and GPS module to the already fantastic handheld stabiliser.
The GPS module works with the gimbals internal gyroscopes to provide an even more accurate degree of levelling and straight horizon. However it's the focus motor that's the real star here!
Combined with the focus wheel on the side of the unit, this allows you to pull focus easily and smoothly. The motor is powered by the gimbal with one short cable so there is a minimum of extra parts and weight. As part of the focus motor kit, there is also a rod mount kit included.
With a payload weight of 3.6Kg the Ronin-S can stabilize a lot of camera + lens combinations. With a great design that always allows you to see the back of the camera, this gimbal is compatible with most modern Video DSLRs like the Canon 5D3 or 5D4 and mirror less cameras like the Sony A7Sii and Panasonic GH5.
Like similar handheld gimbals you have control over the camera and can do panoramic movements and also motion timelapse using a predefined path of up to 5 waypoints as well as a Track feature to allow a repeatable path for the gimbal move when recording video. There is a push mode to reposition the gimbal by hand as well as instant turn off of smoothtrack and 180 degree turn around to transition between upright and underslung mode seamlessly (with practice!).
At under 2kg for the gimbal and grip its a lighter way to stabilize a camera compared to the larger DJI Ronin-M and and Ronin and allows some more creative options you just cannot get with a bigger gimbals. Connect from the DJI assistant App via Bluetooth for setup and/or use the Ronin-S joystick for control - other Pro options are available like the DJI Pro Wirless Reciever and GPS modules, DJI Master Wheels and ForePro.
The batteries last approx 12 hours before you need to charge them from the supplied USB-C charge adapter and the battery adapter can be used to recharge the battery separately from the gimbal unit.
You can mount the Ronin-S onto a Manfrotto tripod using the Ronin-S tripod plate - useful for the motion timelapse type shots but also for ease of use for more static shots, although there is a built in tripod in the Ronin-S grip.
See the Ronin-S videos on the DJI website for more feature details. See the latest compatibility chart from DJI.
