Fashion TV Shoot Edit and Grading on DaVinci Resolve

North Devon based photographer and filmmaker, Christopher Lane, contacted us recently for some help with colour grading a fashion TV advert shoot that he had shot in 4K on a Red Scarlet camera that he wanted to use as part of a Directors Reel (see link above for full video - the section is about 1min in).

The shoot was set up as a series of camera and lighting tests with an editing workflow test to follow. At Maniac Films this was an opportunity to work with DaVinci Resolve, 4K video and Final Cut X to grade and edit the fantastic looking footage from Chris.

Hairtest Video short Edit and Colour Grading - a shot from Davinci Resolve Colour Grading app

We faced a few challenges at first...we had to send our grading monitor to Germany for colour calibration, we had to invest in a new Decklink card to make DaVinci Resolve output the correct colours to the grading monitor and there are also a few bugs exporting footage from Final Cut to DaVinci. However, we persevered and our grading suite is now fully functioning and ready for any eventuality.

The footage was shot at Holborn Studios, directed by Christopher Lane & the D.O.P. was James Layton. It starred Emma G with hair by Craig David & make up by Dani Guinsberg.

We worked mostly on tracking the models eyes and sharpening up the iris's as well as colour matching her hair across several shots and a final colour grade on the video to integrate it into Chris Lanes showreel.

If you need Visual Effects (VFX), colour grading or just some shot clean-ups and rotoscoping work then get in touch with Maniac Films to discuss your film project requirements. We work with film transfer re-grades and film clean-ups (dust and dirt removal, upscaling, colour stabilisation) for DCP and Blu-ray distribution.
