Mounted using velcro (pre-attached) so they can be used in multiples to give exact counterweight to balance your rig on your shoulder. Many DSLR rigs can be too front heavy due to large prime or zoom lenses and so you need a counterweight on the back to help balance it on your shoulder correctly. The alternative is to use a rig power system instead and use the Vlock batteries as counterweights whilst powering your camera and accessories at the same time.
